The Education Watch podcast this week covers a lot of ground that pertains to early education. We talk about a forthcoming Head Start brief, news from the U.S. Department of Education on Race to the Top (including five new winners of Early Learning Challenge grants) and new commentary in Ed Week on half-day kindergarten and the mismatch with the Common Core.

Also part of the conversation: findings from our report with the Joan Ganz Cooney Center on reading and technology. The report, Pioneering Literacy in the Digital Wild West, published as part of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading, includes findings from the app marketplace that show a tilt toward very basic literacy skills. It also includes examples of pioneering projects from early childhood programs that aim to provide a more comprehensive approach to building literacy skills via parents and educators.
