Policy Intern, Open Technology Initiative (Spring 2012)

The New America Foundations’ Open Technology Initiative (OTI) seeks individuals interested in the political, economic and cultural implications of technology, telecommunications, and the Internet for a policy internship. The ideal candidate is an organized self-starter and a current or recent graduate of a communications, journalism, information, political science, or public policy program.

OTI formulates policy and regulatory reforms to support open architectures and open source innovations, and facilitates the development and implementation of open technologies and communications networks. Some of our current policy research includes network neutrality, universal and affordable broadband access, international broadband policy, community and municipal broadband, public media, mobile communications, and emerging communications technologies. 

Responsibilities

  • Research and writing, including policy papers and blog posts, to support the Open Technology Initiative in a wide variety of topics related to technology and telecommunications;
  • Administrative support including updating the website, drafting press releases, and other needs;
  • Assist with organizing policy forums and conferences; and,
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in telecommunications and/or technology policy;
  • Strong research, writing, and editing skills;
  • Familiarity with Internet based research;
  • Be a flexible and enthusiastic team player; and,
  • Enrollment or recent graduate from an undergraduate or graduate program in information technology, public policy, computer science, or political science program is a plus.
