Round Up: Talks on Race to the Top, ESEA, Screen Time, Teacher Evaluation and More

Whether it's predicting winners of the Race to the Top or reflecting on the impact of digital media on childhood, the Early Education Initiative has been doing a lot of presentations this fall. Laura Bornfreund presented an analysis of a proposal for changes to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act put forward by the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee of the U.S. Senate. Her analysis was part of a national webinar sponsored by the National Association for Early Childhood Specialists in State Departments of Education. Laura Bornfreund presented on how to change education policies to ensure that teachers are better prepared to teach in pre-K, kindergarten and the early grades. She also moderated a discussion on the PreK-3rd recommendations published this summer by the National Association of Elementary School Principals Foundation. Slides are available here.

Lisa Guernsey presented a preview of new research that will be included in the second edition of her book on media and children to be released next year, now titled Screen Time: How Electronic Media -- from Baby Videos to Educational Software -- Affects Your Young Child. (The first edition was Into the Minds of Babes: How Screen Time Affects Children From Birth to Age 5.) A recording and presentation slides are available.
