Now that Senator John McCain has locked down the race for the GOP presidential nomination, and we're approaching the final primaries for both parties, speculation moves to the question of who nominees will select to be their running mates. Early Ed Watch gets in on the fun by looking at the early education records of some of the leading names being floated as potential vice presidential nominees. The Vice President is not only a heartbeat away from the presidency, he or she also has opportunities to draw attention to issues he or she cares about, including early education.

This weekend, a who's who of Latin pop stars, including Shakira and Ricky Martin, held free concerts in Buenos Aires and Mexico City to build awareness for the importance of early childhood development and raise funds for ALAS, a nonprofit started by Latin American artists, including Shakira, Wyclef Jean, and Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez, to pressure governments and businesses across the region to support programs that improve early childhood development for poor children. The above clip is from the Buenos Aires concert.

Let's hope their message was heard: There are 54 million children under the age of 5 in Latin America, 32 million of whom live in poverty, and improving childhood development and education for these youngsters is essential for the region's future progress. Someone seems to be listening; last week ALAS raised $200 million in funding for its mission from Mexican telecom billionaire Carlos Slim Helú and Howard Buffet (son of Warren Buffet, who's made significant investments in early education in the United States as well).

Full-Day-K Booming in Iowa, Massachusetts

If you build it, they will come. The Des Moines Register published a story this week about the West Des Moines school district, which will be doubling the number of its full-day kindergarten classrooms next year to accommodate the 600 students who enrolled for the program. Only 17 children had their names on the sign up list for half-day kindergarten.

The New York Times reports that PBS is bringing back The Electric Company, a beloved 1970s-era children's television show that uses SNL-style sketches to help children develop literacy skills. The Electric Company was produced by Children's Television Workshop (since renamed Sesame Workshop, which will be producing the new show), the same organization that produces Sesame Street. While Sesame Street is focused on preschool aged students, The Electric Company is pitched to early elementary school students ages 6 to 9. Among other accomplishments, The Electric Company launched the career of Morgan Freeman, appearing here as recurring sketch character Easy Reader.

Louisiana has the most extensive and concentrated network of oil and gas pipelines in the world. We wouldn't put up with losing 85 percent of the oil through leaks in the pipeline along the way. But we lose 85 percent of children in the education pipeline before completing post-secondary education — technical school, community college or the university.

It's National Teacher Appreciation Week, the time of year when we thank teachers for the hard work they do to educate the nation's children. But which teachers are we talking about? Research shows that early education is just as important the K-12 years, providing an important and fundamental base for success in the later grades.
