Earlier this week we reported on the National Institute for Early Education Research's 2008 State of Preschool Yearbook, which found that states made significant progress in improving pre-k quality and access last year. We also noted that pre-k advocates are very concerned that the current budget crises in the states could derail progress on early education that has been made over the past few years.

Seeking funding for research on child care centers or Head Start? Have some ideas for the creation of a federal center dedicated to research on young English-language learners? Consider submitting them to the Office of Planning, Research, and Evaluation for the Administration for Children and Families. The office, which is part of U.S. Health and Human Services Department, is seeking proposals this spring for three grant programs related to early childhood research.

Duncan's Education Policy Has An Unlikely Supporter: Singer Neko Case

As a fan of singer Neko Case, I was already disappointed that I didn't act in time to get tickets to her two sold-out concerts in Washington, D.C., this week. But now I'm even more bummed. The New Republic reports that U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan attended and introduced Case at last night's performance.

The 2007-08 school year was a good one for pre-kindergarten expansion, but the gains may be shortlived, according to a state-by-state update released today by the National Institute for Early Education Research. NIEER's annual State of Preschool Yearbook is the most comprehensive compilation of data on pre-k enrollment, funding and quality out there.
